What Is Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth. It starts as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding) and can progress into periodontitis (deep infection, recession, and bone loss) if left untreated.

Signs you may need a periodontal evaluation:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Gum recession (teeth look “longer”)
  • Loose teeth or changes in your bite
  • A family history of gum disease

What to Expect During Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth. It starts as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding) and can progress into periodontitis (deep infection, recession, and bone loss) if left untreated.

Comprehensive Evaluation. We measure pocket depths around your teeth and assess bone levels with digital X-rays.

Scaling & Root Planing. This deep cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline.

Antimicrobial Rinse or Antibiotic Gel. When needed, we use targeted medicated rinses to fight infection.

Home Care Coaching. We’ll teach you exactly how to care for your gums at home to support healing.

Ongoing Maintenance. Periodontal patients require more frequent cleanings (every 3–4 months) to maintain health and prevent relapse.

Is Gum Disease Reversible?

Gingivitis (early-stage gum disease) is reversible with good hygiene and routine cleanings.

Periodontitis (advanced gum disease) is not reversible, but it can be controlled and stabilized with ongoing treatment.

We’ll explain where you are in the process and create a plan to get your gums back on track.
